Walmart Plans Second Agra Store, Resumes India Focus

December 22, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Walmart said it plans to open by mid-2015 a Best Price Modern Wholesale store in Agra, its second wholesale store in the city and its 21st in India. Previously a Carrefour wholesale outlet, the store will sell various products, including grocery, apparel, and consumer electronics, to businesses, offices, and organizations. Walmart's last store opening before the Agra outlet was in 2012. Since then, the company had to suspend its expansion plans, due to an internal probe into alleged violations of the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. India's new government and its unfavorable views toward granting foreign retailers full access to the local retail market also kept Walmart and other retailers from launching multi-brand retail operations in the country.
