Wal-Mart Deletes A Management Layer; Aims To Empower Store Managers

April 18, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is cutting the zone manager position from its payrolls in the United States. Affecting around 14,000 employees, the move is aimed at reducing bureaucracy and empowering people running the retailer's 4,500 stores across the country. Zone managers will be reassigned as assistant managers or department managers, with their pay unaffected by the revamp. Wal-Mart said it will hire up to 8,000 new department managers.
