U.K. Food Producers Suffer As Big Four Grocery Chains Pursue Price War

November 24, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Big supermarket chains in the U.K. are locked in a price war that is driving food producers out of business. Accounting firm Moore Stephens reports that 146 food producers have filed for bankruptcy so far this year, compared to 114 in all of 2013. Supermarkets are reacting to the growing interest of British consumers in the low prices offered by German discount grocers Aldi and Lidl. The Big Four grocery chains have reacted by cutting their prices, pushing many food producers into insolvency.
