April 24, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Tesco invested Rs 850 crore in India's multi-brand retail sector. In March 2014, Tesco formed a joint venture with Tata's Trent unit, acquiring a 50-percent stake in Trent Hypermarket Ltd. THL operates the Star Bazaar retail business in the country. Tesco was the first foreign-owned retailer to seek permission to operate a multi-brand retail business in India following the government's decision to allow 51-percent FDI in the segment in September 2012.
