Target Aims To Expand Via Small-Store Way

September 15, 2016: 12:00 AM EST
Target Corp. plans to open hundreds of stores that are smaller than its existing large-format locations in the US. After opening 23 small stores in major cities, such as Chicago and Philadelphia, Target plans to open nine “flex-format” stores in 2016 and at least 16 more in 2017. Usually smaller than 50,000 square feet and with product selection aimed at local demographics, the stores allow Target to open branches in downtown areas.
