Royal Ahold's Merger With Delhaize Creates Fourth-Largest Grocery Chain In US

July 24, 2016: 12:00 AM EST
Royal Ahold's merger with Delhaize Group created Ahold Delhaize, the fourth-largest grocery retailer in the US. Also, the deal will combine Ahold's U.S. East Coast-based chains Stop & Shop and Giant with Delhaize's Food Lion and Hannaford. Ahold owns Albert Heijn, the largest retailer in the Netherlands. Although it will be based in the Netherlands, Ahold Delhaize will be more American than European, with the U.S. chains accounting for 63 percent of sales in 2016.
