Lidl Named U.K. Grocer Of The Year, Beating Out Rival Budget Grocer Aldi

June 11, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
German discount grocer Lidl was named Grocer of the Year in the U.K. by Grocer magazine, grabbing the top ranking from rival discounter Aldi. The company also beat out pricier upmarket stores Waitrose and Asda by following through on its strategy of targeting middle- and upper- income grocery shoppers with a “Deluxe” range of store-label food, wine and liquors. The title of Britain’s favorite supermarket, however, went to Tesco, while best online grocer was Ocado, and cheapest mainstream grocer was Asda.
