Edible Marijuana Is A Megabucks Industry Waiting To Happen

June 20, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Edible marijuana products are expected to be a multimillion-dollar food industry niche – on the U.S. West Coast, at least -- in the coming years, if attendance at San Francisco’s first annual “baked sale” is any indication. But first some hurdles need to be overcome. Smoked marijuana and eaten marijuana are metabolized differently in the body. Peak levels of THC occur rapidly when smoked, but can take hours when eaten, making it difficult to gauge how much to eat and how quickly. Some entrepreneurs strongly advocate implementing best practices for marijuana edibles, including product testing to determine ingredient levels and accurate labeling. Others, however, say it’s just as important to educate buyers on how to eat edibles responsibly.
