Dunnes Now Dominates Ireland’s Retail Grocery Market

November 22, 2016: 12:00 AM EST
Industry researcher Kantar Worldpanel’s latest data show that Dunnes Stores is now the largest grocery retailer in Ireland, based on 12-week supermarket share: now 22.6 percent, up from 22 percent a year ago. A Kantar analyst says Dunnes achieved strong performance by implementing a strategy of encouraging larger shopping trips via its “Shop & Save” promotional campaign. The company encourages shoppers to add one extra item to every basket – worth €3.20 on average – adding to an additional €2.8 million each week. The retailer experienced growth – an overall sales increase of 6.7 percent year on year – thanks especially to toiletries, alcohol, frozen food and confectionery.
