The U.K. Takes A Fancy To The Breakfast-At-Dinner Trend

August 26, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Restaurants in London are picking up on a broad dietary trend imported from the U.S.: eating breakfast at dinnertime. Known as “brinner”, 44 percent of Britons choose traditional breakfast foods for their evening meal. One London café opening soon plans to offer 100 cereals, 12 milks and 20 toppings; another restaurant serves muesli and yogurt with fruit salad, coffee, tea and fresh orange juice until 10 p.m. Many restaurants serves egg dishes all day, including The Wolseley, which dishes up Eggs Benedict until midnight. Duck and Waffle offers deviled duck egg all night long. On the home front, eggs, bacon butties (sandwiches) or fry-ups (full breakfast-style meals) are popular brinner choices.

August 21, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
In India, 48 percent of new FMCG product launches in the year ending May 2014 were premium products, according to IMRB and Kantar Worldpanel. Data from the market research firm revealed Indian consumers prefer high-end versions of consumer products despite the economic slowdown and consumer reluctance to spend. Amazon plans to test its drone delivery service in India, according to media reports. With fewer regulations covering unmanned aerial devices, India is deemed more attractive as a test site for the delivery service earlier proposed by the online retailer for US customers. Designed to deliver packages immediately and doing without the need for conventional shipping services, Amazon’s Prime Air drone service failed to launch due to various regulatory issues, including airspace safety, communications frequencies, and privacy. Amazon aims to launch the service before the Diwali festival, which starts in October and is an importance shopping holiday in India.

McDonald’s Restaurants In Moscow: Pawns In A Larger Geopolitical Game?

August 20, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
A Russian food monitoring agency that has a history of banning food from countries out of favor with the government has closed four McDonald’s restaurants in Moscow because of “sanitary violations”. In the past, the agency has prohibited wine from Georgia and dairy products from Belarus after they sought closer relations with western nations. Recently the agency outlawed canned vegetables, fruit, fish, juice and certain beer and vodka from Ukraine. McDonald's said it was trying to figure out what it needs to do to get the restaurants re-opened “as soon as possible".

Aldi Charges Shoppers Who Use Tap And Go, Fails To Inform Them

August 18, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Discount retailer Aldi was discovered charging customers a 0.5 percent surcharge on transactions made using tap-and-go machines, according to an investigation by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. ASIC’s probe also revealed Aldi failed to inform consumers about the 0.5 percent surcharge for paying by credit card in some of the retailer’s stores. Australia’s ASIC Act’s provisions include Aldi’s action among those considered as “misleading or deceptive”. Consumer protection group Choice said retailers must disclose surcharges, informing consumers before they use tap and go. Aldi said it will put signs and stickers in conspicuous locations in-store advising consumers about the surcharge.

Dollar General Aims To Break Up Merger Deal Between Family Dollar Stores and Dollar Tree

August 18, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Dollar General announced a $8.9 billion takeover bid for discount retailer Family Dollar Stores, which had agreed to be acquired by rival Dollar Tree. Family Dollar Stores keeps its prices low by selling only products it can sell at very low prices. Although there are signs of the US economy returning to growth mode, budget woes still affect many middle-class families who continue seeking discounts for products they buy. After all, the weekly income of the median percentile of US workers has fallen 3.1 percent, after considering the impact of inflation, according to RBS Securities economist Guy Berger. This has made Dollar Tree Stores and other discount retailers a popular shopping destination for cost-conscious consumers.

Successful Restaurant Menu Design Tricks Can Help Diners Choose Healthful Meals

August 17, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
The design and layout of a restaurant menu strongly influence diners’ food choices, according to Cornell University hospitality management researchers. Their study analyzed 217 menus and the meal selections of 300 diners, finding that food items printed in colored or boldface type, or highlighted or set apart in a box, strongly influence selection, especially of profitable items. Also, high-margin menu items given descriptive names – “succulent Italian seafood filet” vs. just “seafood filet” – convince diners that they taste better and therefore are chosen more often, even if priced higher and perhaps less healthful. The researchers suggested that restaurants could use the two tricks – catching attention and sparking imagination – to encourage diners to buy more healthful high margin items.

Commerce Dept. Expects July Fall Off In Retail Sales To Be Short-Lived

August 13, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
The Commerce Department reported that retail auto sales in July declined for the second month in a row, depressing overall retail sales that had increased 0.2 percent in June. Because job growth remains strong, however, the slump in retail sales may be only temporary. The department said it expects consumer spending to “rebound strongly in the coming months”. Core retail sales – net of automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services – were up 0.1 percent in July. Core retail sales correspond very closely to the consumer spending component of gross domestic product.

Digital Trends Are Rapidly Changing The Retail Grocery World In Australia

August 13, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Nielsen predicts that the Australian grocery retail landscape will look a lot different in three years, thanks to the influence of several trends. Internet penetration is approaching saturation, more and more consumers are using connected devices, and attitudes toward online purchasing are evolving. As a result, “brick-and-mortar” groceries are scrambling to establish a digital presence. Perhaps the biggest challenge for grocery companies is how to maintain shopper loyalty. Sixty-four percent of shoppers already visit more than one of the four major retail chain stores in any given week. Shopper loyalty is splintered even more online, where there is more choice and a vastly different shopping environment, according to Nielsen. Complicating the picture is the fact that consumers often combine online and traditional shopping to buy groceries.

Lobster Tail-Shaped Pretzels: New Foodie Craze Or Flash In The Pan?

August 8, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
The New York City baker who invented the hybrid croissant-doughnut known as the cronut has struck again, this time offering up lobster-shaped pretzels stuffed with peanut butter and butter-crunch brittle. Pretzel Lobster Tails are extra soft, topped with sea salt and served, like real lobster tails, with a buttery dipping sauce. According to Dominique Ansel, the lobster shape is perfect for breaking off bite-size chunks and dipping them in the whipped honey brown butter. Believing he may have another big hit on his hands, Ansel is only allowing one Pretzel Lobster Tail per customer, though the pastries will be available all summer long.

August 7, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Discount retailers Lidl and Aldi are posting sales growth and expanding their shares of the UK retail market, according to research firms Kantar Worldpanel and Nielsen. Data from Kantar Worldpanel revealed Lidl’s sales grew 20 percent year on year, expanding its market share to 3.6 percent, while Aldi’s sales increased 32 percent, growing its share to 4.8 percent. Nielsen revealed the number of shoppers visiting the discount retailers increased 14 percent, compared with the previous year. Both discounters plan to expand their store networks, with Lidl managing director Ronny Gottschlich saying he aims to have 1,500 stores in the UK. Although Aldi’s 510 UK stores significantly lag Lidl’s 635, it is growing faster, opening 25 stores in 2012 and 39 in 2013.

Bagel Chain Beefs Up Its Menu

August 7, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Thirty-year-old Bruegger’s, a 300-store national chain of bagel bakeries, is expanding its menu in an unusual direction. The company is introducing bagel burgers, it says, to lure new customers, especially millennials. The idea originated in France, where Bruegger’s parent company Groupe Le Duff is located. The sandwich was first tested there and was a big success. The company will offer two versions: a cheeseburger on a bagel and a burger with fried egg on a bagel. The burgers are served with lettuce, tomato, pickled onions and a "secret sauce".

Wal-Mart Unveils Strategy For Regaining Growth For International Business

August 5, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Wal-Mart has to create a “platform for sustainable growth in China” and revive its operations in Brazil in order for the world’s largest retailer to regain growth mode for its international division, according to Wal-Mart international CEO David Cheesewright. During an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the CEO also said Wal-Mart’s international growth strategy should also involve reenergizing its Mexico business and becoming a leader in the ecommerce segment. Cheesewright acknowledged the problems encountered by the retailer, including the slowdown in sales growth at its 6,100 international stores to 1.3 percent in the year ending January 31, 2014. Wal-Mart also has to deal with slowdowns in consumer spending in Mexico and China and regulatory uncertainties in India and China.

Walmart Canada's Free Shipping Offer For Online Buyers Redefines Market

August 4, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Walmart Canada’s launch of free shipping service for all online purchases in 2013 signaled the company’s resolve to expand its online retail business and compete with other retailers in the country. With its ability to offer free shipping to 97 percent of the country, Walmart enjoys a huge advantage over its smaller rivals, which are likely to find it hard to absorb shipping costs. Walmart Canada’s now offers 175,000 items and counts about 400,000 visitors a day. Also, the company plans to launch its click and collect service, which will allow Ontario customers to buy online and pick up items from lockers at designated stores or at the retailer’s headquarters.

Fast-Food Companies Need To Get Back To Basics To Compete With Fast-Casuals

August 4, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Buffeted by declining sales and restaurant traffic, McDonald’s has pinpointed a major problem and plans to somehow deal with it. Fast-casual restaurants are knocking the stuffing out of the fast-food giant and the fast-food segment in general. Fast-casuals stick to the quick-service format, but offer better quality food and ingredients at reasonable prices. McDonald’s realizes that cosmetic upgrades – outlet remodels, new menu items, comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, etc. – only go so far in retaining customers. The company doesn’t need to overhaul its business to compete, Euromonitor says, but can “make traditional fast food appealing again”. That means very fast, very cheap, very appealing food for people who need convenience over luxury and ease over variety.

Dual-Branded Store Strategy May Revive Mrs. Fields, TCBY

August 4, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
Famous Brands, owner of the slumping Mrs. Fields cookies and TCBY frozen yogurt brands (and stores), acknowledges that the two retail chains are “in a rut”. Sales at both dropped seven percent in 2013. To remedy the situation, the new owner of Famous Brands, Z Capitol Partners, decided to try a new strategy, pairing the two brands in one store. It seems to be working: the company has doubled openings of the dual-branded stores in one year. A Technomic analyst says it’s a smart strategy. "Pairing a frozen dessert with a bakery style treat hedges trends."

Metro Seeks Deal To Sell Vietnam Cash & Carry Unit To Thai Retailer

August 4, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
German retailer Metro AG is negotiating to sell its Cash & Carry wholesale business in Vietnam to Thailand-based Berli Jucker. With potential value of more than $500 million, the proposed deal would be part of Metro CEO Olaf Koch’s efforts to transform the retailer into a leaner and more profitable company. A sale, however, would be contrary to Koch’s previously announced strategy of focusing on his company’s Cash & Carry business. Koch’s plans also focus on expanding the company’s Media Markt Saturn unit, which is facing growing competition from rivals on the Internet and is affected by the conflict between Metro and company founder Erich Kellerhals.

Entrepreneur Sees Crickets As The Next Culinary Sensation

August 2, 2014: 12:00 AM EST
The entrepreneur who founded Bitty Foods, a company focused on using crickets as ingredients in baked goods, believes she’s on the leading edge of an emerging culinary sensation bigger than quinoa. She first tasted – and liked – cooked mealworms and crickets on trips to Southeast Asia and Mexico. Back home she did some experimenting and eventually launched her current business. Roasted mealworms have a nutty flavor, and could appeal to people following the Paleo diet, says Megan Miller, but they have one major drawback: they trigger Americans’ gag reflex. Crickets, however, evoke memories of  “pleasant summer nights and crickets chirping”.
