Beacons Offer Advertisers A Sophisticated Way To Gather Consumer Intelligence

February 16, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
The tiny Bluetooth transmitters known as beacons offer marketers a new layer of consumer intelligence that reveals digital actions and exposures. Beacons – currently placed around stores to push coupons and user reviews to shopper phones and tablets -- allow advertisers to pull together online ad and marketing exposures to offline behaviors. They also make the process of retargeting offline behaviors with online ads very accurate “because real-world behaviors can be located to extremely precise locations and interactions”. The insights on the potential of beacons were presented at a recent Mediapost conference.

How Bread Making Can Nourish The Body And Soul

February 16, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Bread making usually results in a delicious, healthful food product, but the process itself can also be food for the soul. St. John’s Bakery, a Toronto shop adjacent to a local Catholic mission, employs immigrants, recovering addicts and disabled people in the production of high quality bread. The process is transforming lives with “job training and the simple alchemy of bread, yeast and water”. According to Father Roberto Ubertino, “a daily miracle takes place” in the conversion of those simple ingredients. The organic, artisanal breads – baguettes, round loaves of country rye, and cilantro olive breads – are sold at premium prices at markets, restaurants and specialty stores in Toronto. But the goal of the bakery is not cash profit. It’s sustainable fulfillment of a "social mandate".

E-Commerce No Threat To India’s Traditional Retailers

February 16, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
A report by a consulting/accounting firm says it will be a long time before traditional retailers in India are threatened by online competitors. Pricewaterhouse-Coopers says the key reasons are last-mile connectivity, high payment cost, low profitability, regulatory barriers and a scarcity of skilled manpower. Low Internet penetration in the country is another major barrier: only 16 percent of India's 1.2 billion people had access to the Internet in 2013. Bottom line: online stores are projected to account for only three percent of India's total retail market by 2020.

Tesco Plans To Reduce Workforce By 10,000 Jobs

February 14, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Tesco is reportedly planning to reduce its total workforce by as much as 10,000 jobs, as part of chief executive Dave Lewis' turnaround scheme for UK's largest retailer. According to media reports, up to 6,000 job cuts will come from the company's head offices and 43 stores it plans to shut down. The rest of the jobs to be cut will come from the company's planned reorganization of operations, including the removal of a management layer from Tesco stores. Lewis said he plans to reduce head office operating costs by 30 percent and save £250 million in costs across the company.

China Resources Rebrands Tesco China Stores

February 12, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
China Resources Enterprises said it has rebranded all of the 135 Tesco China stores under its Vanguard brand. In 2014, China Resources acquired a majority stake in Tesco's retail operations in China. February 12, 2015: 12:00 AM EST

The company will mimic Amazon by selling pretty much everything, but 10 to 15 percent cheaper than Amazon. Customers will make up the difference with a $50 annual membership fee, like at Costco.

Economic Signs Suggest Lower Prices At Grocery Stores, Too, Not Just Gas Stations

February 12, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
The most visible drops in commodity prices – oil and gasoline – are not the only ones that could have an impact on consumers in the near future. Farmers and miners are keenly aware that prices of copper, iron ore and corn are way down, along with soybeans, tin, sugar, wheat and cotton. So when will these price drops begin to help consumers? It’s difficult to predict because lower commodity prices are rarely passed on quickly to consumers. Producers concerned about volatility want to be sure cheaper raw material prices remain low. But there is reason for grocery shopper optimism, perhaps later this year. Farmers are experiencing bumper crops and surpluses; there’s plenty of cheap feed for livestock; farmer energy costs are lower; food imports are cheaper; and there’s reduced foreign competition for food.

During its first month of operations, the company reported $6.4 million in sales. Costco's partnership with Tmall Global offers several advantages, including the ability to operate without the need for local storage facilities and the need to secure business licenses.

February 6, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
New York's superstar baker Dominique Ansel – creator of the wildly successful, widely copied croissant-doughnut hybrid known as the “cronut” – has nothing on the International House of Pancakes (IHOP). After a year of experimentation, the restaurant chain has come up with its own mash-up pastry based on a croissant – the “criss-croissant”. The treat consists of croissant dough (42 layers) baked in a waffle iron, then filled and topped with either lemonade cream and blackberries or sweetened cream cheese and strawberry rhubarb. Other national chains that have created hybrid pastries include Dunkin' Donuts (the popular croissant donut) and Jack in the Box.

Asda, Other U.K. Grocery Chains, Struggle To Compete With Discounters

February 5, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Asda CEO Andy Clarke advises Dave Lewis, new head of supermarket rival Tesco, to wean the company off discount vouchers. Tesco’s sales have increased through the use of vouchers, which Clarke calls “quantitative easing”, a solution that can only work for so long. Asda has switched from vouchers to straight price cuts. In addition, the company is revamping stores to try to win market share from competitor retailers, and to dampen the impact of discounters Aldi and Lidl. Asda will be devoting more store space to fresh food, hot food and health and beauty products, and much less space to goods now bought mostly online, like televisions, DVDs and CDs.

Despite Food Safety Setback, Yum Brands Believes In China’s Potential

February 4, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Though Yum Brands has cut ties with the company that supplied its Chinese KFC locations with tainted meat, consumers remain wary. The company operates 4,800 KFC restaurants and 1,600 Pizza Huts, so a slow rebound from the disaster will be costly. It took Yum more than a year to recover from a similar publicity problem that occurred in 2012 when a Chinese media outlet accused local KFC suppliers of “cramming extra antibiotics into their chickens”. Yum CEO Greg Creed said the company firmly believes in the long-term potential of the Chinese market and expects to open at least 700 new units there.

New York Orders Big Retailers To Stop Selling Phony Dietary Supplements

February 3, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Four national retail chains were accused by the State of New York of selling “fraudulent and in many cases contaminated” dietary supplements. The state attorney general sent cease-and-desist orders to Walmart, Walgreens, Target and GNC including test results showing that supplements contained cheap fillers and hazardous substances, and often none of the labeled product. Five of six of GNC’s “Herbal Plus” supplements “were either unrecognizable or a substance other than what they claimed to be”. Three of six Target supplements (ginkgo biloba, St. John’s wort and valerian root) did not contain the advertised ingredient. Instead they contained powdered rice, beans, peas and wild carrots.

Millennials Like Fast-Casual, And Convenience Store, Food

February 4, 2015: 12:00 AM EST

A large number of Millennials are fueling the trend away from fast food and toward more upscale fast-casual restaurants. But an even larger number are patronizing convenience stores, according to NPD Group. About 11.1 percent of Millennial food and beverage purchases took place at convenience stores in 2014, compared to 7.7 percent in 2006. Fast-casual accounted for 6.1 percent of Millennial stops in 2014 vs. 3.1 percent in 2006. NPD says Millennials are cheap, like anyone else. And they “get food as fuel” rather than “go out for exciting eating adventures”.

Top Consumer Goods Brands Fight Bruising Wars With Private Labels In Europe

January 26, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Major consumer goods brands are finding it hard to turn back expanding sales of supermarkets' own-label products in Europe. Advancing private labels are grabbing market share from household goods brands, such as Nestle and Unilever, as well as causing erosions in prices and margins. According to market research firm IRI, however, sales of own-label products are slowing down, as leading supermarkets cut prices on top brands as part of their efforts to battle discount retailers, such as Aldi and Lidl from Germany. In 2014, own-label products lost 0.1 percentage point of market share, a first since 2007, data from IRI showed.

January 22, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Regional supermarket chain Wegmans announced its plan to reduce the amount of sugar added to its private label products. Driven by the retailer's desire to help customers “eat healthier,” the initiative also involves changing the formulation of own-brand bottled sauces to cut their sugar content, as well as other products sold under its brand. Also, Wegmans launched smaller-portion sizes of its bakery products, such as mini croissants and mini sweet rolls.

Supermarket Chain Cuts Sugar Content Of House Brand Foods

January 22, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Supermarket chain Wegmans announced it is cutting the levels of added sugar in some of its own-label food products to help customers eat a more healthful diet. The company said it is adding less sugar in organic varieties of its foods and “they still taste great”.  The retailer is also reformulating bottled sauces and other products to reduce sugar levels while preserving the flavor. The company acknowledged that it’s not tinkering with its bakery products – that “can be tricky” – but instead is reducing portion sizes rather than cutting sugar content. That means more mini croissants, mini sweet rolls and mini cheesecakes, the company said.

Consumers Still Turn To Private Label Products For Value, Affordability

January 20, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
A new report from researcher IRI shows that private label products have proven to be the answer for consumers looking to stretch their shopping dollars while finding value. Brand selections continue to be based on affordability: one-third of U.S. shoppers look for and choose private label products to save money. U.S. consumers spent $120 billion on private label products in 2014, an increase of 2.1 percent over 2013. But IRI says consumers are looking for value, not just low prices, so it’s important for retailers to stock national and private label brands offering value and affordability. National brand innovation has been strong in beauty products, while private label is strong in the mass/super channel.

Problems In Emerging Markets Stifle Unilever’s Financial Performance

January 20, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Unilever said weak performance in emerging markets adversely affected fourth quarter sales, which were lower than expected by analysts. Underlying sales rose 2.1 percent, though analysts were expecting a 2.6 percent increase. Unilever’s decision to destock its products from Chinese store shelves as a reaction to the slower economy there led to a 20 percent slide in sales. Full year sales growth also came in slightly below expectations at 2.9 percent. The company blamed problems in emerging markets – 60 percent of Unilever’s sales – for the tepid financial performance. Besides the slower Chinese economy, problems included weakening currencies, sanctions on Russia, and fierce price competition among European retailers.
