E. Coli Outbreak May Sabotage Chipotle’s “Buy Local” Tradition

December 3, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Thanks to a severe E. coli outbreak, Chipotle Mexican Grill is making some major changes in its supply chain practices that could adversely affect its seven-year-old “buy local” commitment. The outbreak, whose cause has not been pinpointed, sickened 43 people and led to the temporary closing of restaurants in six states for deep cleaning. The health scare has hurt the company’s stock price, which dropped 11 percent in October and 9.5 percent in November, and slowed sales. In response, Chipotle has tightened safety standards, especially ingredients testing, for produce suppliers. Smaller local suppliers may not be able to meet the elevated standards, the company acknowledged, putting a crimp in its promise of using food grown locally.

Bay Area Bagel Makers Endure Eastern Snobbery While Creating Something Unique

December 2, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
San Francisco’s expanding community of bagel makers endures the baleful frowns, sneers and carping of East Coast purists (and snobs). Yet they forge ahead, developing their own versions of the “proper” bagel. The result of all the experimenting is a “distinctly Bay Area bagel.” They are chewy, complex, crusty, sure, but they also have a “snap,” writes reporter Jonathan Kauffman, a “hint of barley malt” and “hint of acidity” that one might associate with sourdough. Tthe unique flavor comes not from sourdough, however, but instead from a blend of commercial yeasts and natural leavening. Bay Area bakers say they’re not consciously trying to create something distinctly different from the East Coast bagel. But they do admit to calling them “West Coast style.”

Boston Grocer Gathers, Prepares, And Sells Affordable Healthful Food

December 1, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
A former Trader Joe’s executive has opened a nonprofit grocery store in Boston whose mission is to sell healthful, prepared food that poor people can afford. The basic business model of Doug Rauch’s Daily Table is to collect nutritious food destined for the waste bins, prepare it for busy shoppers, and sell it extremely cheaply. It attacks two problems at once: the huge amount (40 percent) of good food that is wasted and the fact that nutritious food can be too expensive in poor communities. “A healthy meal is a lot trickier [than junk food] because of the costs associated with fruits and vegetables, dairy, protein,” says Rauch. “These are expensive ingredients."

Godiva Tries To Shed Stodgy Image

December 1, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Godiva Chocolatier is trying to exchange its “more formal” image among chocolate buyers for a more accessible, approachable, but still “luxury” one. A new ad campaign emphasizes the theme – “It’s More Than Just Chocolate” – and introduces globally a “new look and feel” for the nearly 90-year-old confection brand. Part of the new look is a “whimsical” typography that suggests a pastry chef’s writing. For the holidays, the brand will take the chocolates out of their boxes in stores to achieve a less formal look. The company is expanding its advertising beyond in-store displays in retail shops, Macy's, and Barnes & Noble, to include digital advertising, content and influencer partnerships. An internally created digital video series will feature a chef talking about chocolate themes.

Salt Content Labeling Rule Takes Effect In Big Apple

November 30, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
The latest in New York City’s series of regulatory attempts to get its citizens to eat more healthfully took effect earlier this month. Chain restaurants are now required to tell diners – via a salt-shaker image on menu items – that the food contains more than the recommended limit of 2,300 mg, or a teaspoon, of sodium a day. Most Americans eat too much salt – an average of 3,400 mg a day – which increases the risk of high blood pressure and heart problems. Part of the problem is salt-rich food served at restaurants. A New York cheddar and bacon burger at TGI Friday's contains 4,280 mg, for example. But restaurant groups and salt producers say the city is overreaching. They are expected to challenge the new regulation in court.

Burger Restaurants Top List Of Britain’s Favorites, Bookatable Says

November 30, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
A U.K. restaurant booking service’s analysis of its three million-diner database finds that burgers are booming in 2015. Bookings to burger eateries increased from just 21 in 2014 to over 30,000 in 2015. Part of the reason is an increase in the number of burger restaurants in the country: Bookatable added 71 restaurants to its database this year. Other hot cuisines include Scandinavian, barbecue, South East, Welsh, afternoon tea, Greek, Japanese and Thai. Cuisines that fell out of favor: Nepalese, Pakistani and contemporary Italian. In terms of meal times, breakfast bookings increased 24 percent from 2014 to 2015, while brunch bookings rose 72 percent.

November 27, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
In 2014, the United States was the largest market for private-label products, according to Euromonitor. Data from the market research firm revealed private label accounted for 67 percent, or $9.7 billion, of the $14.5 billion total sales. With private label accounting for only 16 percent of the bread market’s $22.8 billion total sales, the market offers more opportunity for growth.

E. Coli Illnesses Traced To Recalled Packages Of Vegetable Mix

November 26, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
A packaged mixture of diced celery and onion has been recalled because an outbreak of E. coli-caused illness has been traced to it. Taylor Farms Pacific recalled the mix “out of an abundance of caution,” the FDA said in a statement. The mixture was used to make chicken salad, Thai-style salads, packaged dinners and wraps, and other foods sold by Costco, Target, Starbucks and other stores and restaurants. The illnesses of 19 people in seven states nationwide were traced to the vegetable mix. Costco posted signs in its stores and provided detailed purchase logs to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help it track buyers and ingredient sources.

French Companies Call On World Leaders To Sign Global Climate Change Deal

November 26, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
In France, a group of 39 companies, including retail giant Carrefour, is calling on the French COP21 presidency and all governments attending the United Nations Framework Agreement on Climate Change meeting in Paris to sign a global agreement that would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Seeking a deal that would help keep global warming at a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius, the companies believe that putting an economic value on carbon in major economic regions will help business leaders to see the impact of GHG emissions linked to their companies’ operating, investment, and R&D decisions. Some of the concrete steps being taken by these companies to improve sustainability include the use of active and passive energy-efficient solutions, development of low-carbon capacities, and reduction of emissions from the production and use of raw materials, products, or facilities.

Wal-Mart Sharpens E-Commerce Capabilities; Readies For Battle With Amazon

November 25, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has reorganized its online retail operations to better compete with online giant Amazon.com Inc. Dubbed by the retailer as Pangaea, and started in 2012, the project has cost the company billions of dollars and involved acquiring 15 technology companies and the hiring of 3,600 new IT professionals. Chief technology officer Jeremy King, who saw the reorganization as an opportunity to “rearrange” the world’s biggest retailer, will determine how the company’s forthcoming $2 billion investment will be spent. Recognizing that search could help propel Wal-Mart’s online business, King pushed Kosmix, a data analytics firm acquired by the retailer in 2011, to build a search technology to replace Endeca, a search engine currently owned by Oracle Corp.

Will Free Fruit Giveaway Change Customer Attitudes Toward Tesco?

November 25, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Following the lead of an innovative Tesco store manager in Lincolnshire, the British grocery retailer has decided to test market the idea of giving away free fruit to children at 15 of its stores. The stores will take part in a four-week trial during which boxes of apples, bananas and oranges will be placed at entrances for parents to give to children. Though Tesco says the test is based on altruistic intentions, a more practical agenda may be in play. The company is locked in a battle for customers with grocery discounters and online food shopping sites. It is also dealing with some bad press due to an accounting scandal and shopper perceptions of high prices and poor customer service.

New Thanksgiving Trend Focuses More On Friends Than Family

November 25, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
It would seem to be a trend among affluent Americans – the Millennials demographic, actually – because it’s unlikely that anyone else could afford it. The trend is called “Friendsgiving,” and the idea is basically to stage a Thanksgiving dinner for family, then another one for single friends. If one Thanksgiving is expensive and time-consuming to provision and prepare, imagine two or even three. An example is the Riley family of Harrisburg, Pa., who prepare a big turkey and ham for 20 friends each year, each of whom brings a dish they cooked up. The idea, which exploded on social media over the past few years, has also caught on among grocery retailers. Some chains, including Peapod, created marketing campaigns and social media promotions around #Friendsgiving. They have also included recipes on their blogs targeting Millennial celebrations with friends.

November 25, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
UK retailer Tesco PLC agreed to pay $12 million in order to settle a shareholder lawsuit in the United States. Claiming that accounting irregularities inflated its share price, the plaintiff sued after Tesco revealed in September 2014 that it exaggerated first-half profit by £250 million. Tesco’s American depositary shares fell 15 percent the next trading day.

Hispanic Consumers Prefer To Stick With Familiar Brands

November 24, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Hispanic consumers in the United States tend to avoid uncertainties, preferring to buy brands they are familiar with, according to a study by Geometry Global. Data from the market research firm revealed advertisers should remember that Hispanics can switch between their Latino cultural codes and the American culture elements they have adopted. Unlike American mothers who tend to stick to their shopping list, Hispanic moms are more open to unplanned purchases and are more open to discovery. Hispanics are more focused on the “now,” driven perhaps by the fact that most of them are Catholics. Also, Hispanics have a collective cultural value, unlike the other cultures in the United States.

Evidence Of Wal-Mart Bribery In Brazil Uncovered, U.S. Probers Say

November 24, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc. might have committed bribery in Brazil, according to evidence discovered by U.S. investigators. Federal prosecutors are focusing their investigation on $500,000 in payments they claim were paid to an individual hired to secure government permits needed for the construction of two stores in Brasilia, the country’s capital, between 2009 and 2012. Previous investigations made by lawyers from the Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission, and agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service did not reveal enough evidence of Wal-Mart committing acts of foreign bribery in Mexico and India.

Albertsons Gets Government Approval To Buy Back Some Stores It Had To Sell When It Acquired Safeway

November 24, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Gross approved Albertsons Cos.’s plan to reacquire 33 stores it had to sell as part of the government’s requirements for approving its acquisition of rival Safeway Inc. In January 2015, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission approved the merger deal on the condition that the companies would sell 168 stores to preserve competition in the retail market in several Western states. Haggen Holdings LLC bought most of the stores; however, it struggled to make the stores work and had to close some of them.

Walmart Takes Another Attempt At Improving Inventory Management

November 23, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Walmart is revamping its inventory by reducing the number of stock-keeping units. During the past year, the retailer has removed about 15 percent of its store displays and around 2,500 items from its store shelves. Walmart’s attempt in 2009 to rationalize its inventory failed because its SKU-reduction plan failed to consider what customers wanted. To make sure it does not repeat its mistake, Walmart’s inventory management plans include widening aisles up to 10 feet and revising restock times to make sure shelves do not run out of popular products. To ensure the success of its revised stocking strategy, Walmart should consider several methods, including transferability of demand, loyal customer analyses, and what-if and cross-shopping analyses.

CPG Shoppers Are Heavily Influenced By Coupons, Sales, Bargains

November 19, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Nielsen research finds that shoppers aren’t particularly loyal to CPG brands, especially if there’s money to be saved. A June 2015 survey shows that 60 percent of shoppers check out sales, coupons and other promotions online or on their smartphones before heading to a store to buy CPG goods. Another 28 percent are enticed by e-mails to visit online shopping sites. And 26 percent said they always compare prices online before heading to the store. Upstart Indian FMCG Pins Growth Plans On Consumer Insights

November 18, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
A small but ambitious Indian FMCG company with roots in retail believes it may have a marketing edge on the entrenched big brands that dominate the retail universe in the country. Future Group believes that its understanding of Indian needs and preferences will make a big difference. The company has learned that cheaper prices and fancy store displays don’t work as well as consumer insights. Consider body wash, for example, a product that does not sell well. Imported brands tend to be expensive and thick, made for consumers used to taking showers.  Future Group came up with a cheaper product, Think Skin, that is thinner and better suited for use with mugs and buckets. It is now a market leader.

New Phase Of E-Tail Exploits Social Media’s Unique Selling Advantages

November 18, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
E-tail has evolved to a new stage, beyond simply having a choice of products online and fast, cheap and convenient delivery. The new stage is called social commerce because it so heavily depends on social media users who develop an emotional connection with products first seen on sites like Facebook and Pinterest. These sites are adding Buy! Buttons as fast as they can. Facebook’s button could increase its annual revenue by 5-10 percent. Retailers and technology companies believe Instagram, with all of its product photographs, is an ideal platform to boost sales. They are developing systems to make shopping there possible. It may soon be possible to make customer photographs posted on Instagram “shoppable” from their own Web sites.

Amazon Becomes Online Retail Powerhouse; Leaves Most Competitors Behind

November 18, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Online retailer Amazon.com’s investments in infrastructure and logistics have begun to pay off, according to market analysts. It is grabbing a growing share of the online retail markets in the United States and overseas, attracting more consumers to its Prime fast-shipping program, and is gradually realizing bigger profits from online sales. According to analysts, Amazon is so ahead of the game it is virtually impossible for other e-commerce companies to catch up with the online retail giant. Also, some analysts believe there are no credible competitors among other online retailers. This does not mean, however, that Amazon can relax at the moment. It faces serious challenges in the overseas market and that although it has seen rising sales in India, it continues to find it hard to break into China’s online retail market. Local online retail giant Alibaba’s sales and profits are exponentially larger than those of Amazon.

Target Launches First Ad Campaign Aimed At Hispanic Consumers

November 18, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Target launched the #SinTraduccion, the retailer’s first advertising campaign focused exclusively on Hispanic consumers in the United States. Census data showing Hispanics accounting for one in six people in the US convinced Target to launch the campaign, according to SVP of marketing Rick Gomez. Highlighting Hispanic moments that cannot be translated into English, the campaign helped create deeper interaction with the target audience. Also, it has helped Hispanic customers see Target from the perspective of their own traditions and experiences, Gomez said.

Strange Culinary Bedfellows: Doughnuts And Pho

November 17, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
It’s a little early to tell, but it might be a sign of the times: the “hybrid” food trend morphing into a hybrid restaurant trend. A Fort Wayne, Ind., doughnut shop used to share space with a hot dog diner, but will now share with a Vietnamese restaurant. Mike’s Donuts and Pho Viet couldn’t be more opposite in cuisine. Doughnuts, after all, are loaded with sugar and fat. Vietnamese food – especially namesake pho soup with various vegetables – is fairly healthful eating. Also on the menu are noodle bowls, small salads, Vietnamese sandwiches, rice plates, appetizers, Vietnamese iced coffee, boba tea and more. Coming soon: beer and wine, if Pho Viet can get the appropriate licenses.

Spending On Employees, Technology Pays Off For Walmart

November 17, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Though investors were at first frightened about profit-depressing expenditures by Walmart – on e-commerce technologies and higher employee wages – there may be reasons tobe relieved. The company’s 3rd quarter results showed same store sales in the U.S. up for the fifth quarter in a row; store traffic increased 1.7 percent. The company acknowledged that its $1.2 billion “investment in our people” – i.e., wage hikes for thousands of employees – was the key driver of the big drop in consolidated operating income. But the increased pay for low-wage employees as jobs get more complicated and demanding has helped improve customer service, increase store cleanliness and reduce out-of-stocks. A key benefit is a big hike in customer satisfaction scores.

Big-Name Personal Care Brands Dominate Search Rankings

November 17, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Online shopping for personal care products is increasing, so the ranking of brands in search results is of paramount importance. P&G has had the greatest success in placing products at the head of the search line on the first page. P&G brands benefit from the company’s early online success and involvement in e-tail merchandising programs. A report on e-tailer strategy suggests that it’s tough for new brands to break into the top ranks because incumbents have an advantage. In diaper products, for example, P&G’s Pampers wins 40 percent first-page placement on Amazon and Walmart, while Kimberly-Clark’s Huggies leads on Target.

Number Of Product Reviews Determines Search Performance On Online Retail Sites

November 17, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
According to L2’s “Insight Report: Enterprise E-Tailer Strategy” report, the number of a product’s reviews affects that product’s search rankings on online retail sites. Results of the study revealed Procter & Gamble’s personal care products have significantly more product reviews than those of its rivals’ products. Brands can improve their review count by syndicating reviews from brand sites.

Aldi, Lidl Boost Grocery Market Share In U.K., But Big Chains Are Fighting Back

November 17, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
British grocery store shopping data from Kantar show that discount German grocers Aldi and Lidl achieved a combined 10 percent market share in the quarter ended November 8. That’s double the market share from 2012. The two chains added a million shoppers from a year ago, and average spend per shopping trip was up four percent. With plans to open hundreds of stores in the short term, the two retailers are tightening their hold on British grocery shopping. Conventional grocers are fighting back, however. Sainsbury's most recent fiscal period saw a 1.5 percent increase in sales, a 0.2 percent increase in market share, and the distinction of being once again the second largest grocery chain behind Asda.

Wal-Mart Sees Better Short-Term Revenue Performance; Reports Mixed Results For 3Q 2015

November 17, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. reported same-store sales in the United States grew 1.5 percent in the third quarter of 2015, its fifth consecutive quarter of growth following a long period of contractions. Also, for the fourth straight quarter, the number of shoppers visiting Wal-Mart stores grew, rising 1.7 percent. Profit, however, dropped 11 percent, due to higher operating costs. Warning that profit is likely to continue declining, Wal-Mart lowered its long-term profit goals in August and in October 2015. During the quarter, the company reported profit reached $3.3 billion, down from $3.71 billion in the same quarter of the previous year. Worldwide revenue declined 1.3 percent to $117.41 billion, with results hampered by weak performance in markets, including Brazil and the UK.

Amazon Launches Prime Now One-Hour Delivery Service

November 17, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Online retailer Amazon.com Inc. launched Prime Now, a delivery service that promises to send products to customers in an hour or less. Aimed at shoppers who are prone to making last-minute holiday purchases, the delivery service will cover Seattle, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and other cities across the country. Offering the service is an “expensive bet,” requiring the company to keep inventory in cities where real estate and workers cost considerably more. Amazon, however, by combining the convenience of online shopping with the immediate satisfaction of going to a quick trip to the local store, poses a more serious threat to other retailers, including Target Corp. and Macy’s Inc.

Spicing Up Pizzas, Cakes, And Doughnuts With Spuds

November 17, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Yet another way to add variety to pizzas and other baked goods is to use an unlikely vegetable – potatoes – as a topping or as a main ingredient. A New England pizza chain makes a mashed potato sauce for its Italian pies, but also offers a meatloaf, mashed potato and herb pizza, and a mashed potato, bacon, and scallion version. In Korea, pizza chains, including Pizza Hut Korea, routinely use frozen potatoes as a topping. Susan Weller of the United States Potato Board says potatoes can also be used in other kinds of baked goods to enhance texture, taste and shelf-life. "Potato doughnuts made with instant mashed potatoes are being offered at on-trend bakeries and cafes," she said. Other spud-based baked treats include potato cakes and chocolate potato doughnuts with crème anglaise.

Falabella Thrives Despite Economic Slowdown In Chile, South America

November 14, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
Chile-based retailer Falabella reported net profits rose 16 percent to 95 billion pesos, or $136 million, in the third quarter of 2015. What makes this remarkable is that the company achieved this growth despite the economic slowdown affecting South America in general and the country in particular. Also, the company’s revenues rose 13 percent, compared with the previous year, despite the Chilean currency’s weakening compared with the dollar. Factors that have helped Falabella grow its business included its vast presence covering six countries in the region. In addition to its 101 department stores, the company also owns 102 supermarkets, as well as 39 shopping centers.

European Retailers Use Smartphone Technologies To Personalize Shopping

November 12, 2015: 12:00 AM EST
French retailer Carrefour is testing strip light technology to track shoppers with smartphones and point them to tailored special offers. It’s the latest European initiative that uses smartphones to inform and guide shoppers – with their permission – to personalized promotions. Marks and Spencer in Great Britain sends text message ads to shoppers in or near its stores. (Three-fourths of British retailers use technologies, including facial recognition software, to track customers in stores, for both security purposes and personalized shopping.) German retailers use the smartphone app Shopkick to reward consumers with points when they visit stores and scan products. But older shoppers aren’t particularly in love with the advances. “We are being tracked to death,” said a 50-year-old Carrefour customer. “I guess I'm old school, but I want to keep my privacy."
